Love your library? Help save it! Be heard & make a difference.

On Friday, Governor Ted Strickland announced that in order to help balance Ohio’s budget, he plans to cut $200 million from Ohio library funding over the next 2 years. What does this mean?

Starting July 1, if the cuts are approved, the Columbus Metropolitan library
may have to cut hours and close branches.

How can you help? If the library means a lot to you…if you depend on the books, the people, the homework help, or just the place to be…let your voice be heard! Time is short—we have only days to make a difference.

Find out ways you can help save our libraries.

Tell your parents, your friends, your neighbors…and encourage them to do the same.

I have always taken libraries for granted until now. Sometimes we can't truly appreciate common day things when we can't see what life would be like without them. Having a local library is great and a convenient way to find information and express yourself.

Anonymous said...

I think that is an awful idea. We all need libraries.

I don't want them to close any libraries. My high school, Metro, may also be affected

Do not let them close the libraries! Take action, teens of Columbus! This is the rallying call! I don't mean to be drastic, but CML is my lifeblood! Fight for what's ours! It is our right to books and development through programs like these! We are the ones who decide whether to stand by and let our libraries close, or to fight... and win! Come on!

I hope you guys vdon't shut down because you guys are one of the best libarays

I think its terrible the libary might be shut down. The library is a good place for friends to meet up and hang out or work on school projects. It is a quiet relaxing place to work. Help save the library.

The library in my town is small, the books are old and out-dated, and it takes sometimes almost a YEAR for them to get requested books for you! BUT...I started going to the New Albany and Main Branches of the library. I know that it's pretty positive that they won't close the Main branch, but the New Albany branch is GREAT! Save the libraries! THIS MIGHT AFFECT PEOPLE'S SCHOOLWORK!

I think that this is terrible because as a teen who participates in library activites will be one of the thousands of kids in Columbus who will have nowhere 2 go and nothing 2 do.

I'm juss want 2 say that I'm pretty mad at Governor Strickland 4 doing this 2 me................what will I do now? Sit home and watch cartoons?

Anonymous said...

Without libraries, kids will have no purpose to be independent and will choose to rob stores instead..............is this what Governor Strickland would want???

Anonymous said...

As an African-American teen who struggles in a poor environment, I can't afford to pay for access to materials and tutors..........can someone tell me what type of person would find it ok to ban teens from information or the new 411 on the block?

Anonymous said...

First they close the rec. center now library this is crazy. This is were other kid and I get school work done. Kid would get a education with out book, and computer to do researech

omg this sucks

Anonymous said...

I cant believe it. Now where am i gonna spend my summers.

i think that the libraries should think of ways 2 raise money like asking 4 donations or having people sighn a patition

Well, the library is, apparently, no longer on "red alert." This can only be a good thing! : ) If you read the homepage article, we sent 35,000 to our government! That's sooo cool. And to think that I sent one... : ) Now we just have to wait. I hope the governor doesn't make the wrong choice (a.k.a. taking away funds)!

ok the libraries and schools should not be punished for taxes or because the economy is going bad i think the drug places should be. higher the taxes on cigarets and alcohol dont punish the kids, teens and others who didnt do anythin to make to economy become so bad. punish those who think they need some kind of drug and they dont want to support no one!!!

I am autistic and my provider takes me to the library a couple of times a week.First the Govenor wants to take funding from my medicare and the mayor shuts down rec centers and now the libraries. What are kids like me going to do?

Anonymous said...

I think that everyone should go to the library. If for any reason libraries start to close, children and adults would go up to them and get angry at the staff, and it could cause riots. It would just be a bad thing for the way we look at or check out books.

Anonymous said...

I think cutting the library's budget by that much is an absolutely horrid idea. I absolutely love this library system and it would be an immense disappointment if branches had to close as a result of these proposed budget cuts.

Anonymous said...

I think closing libraries isn't a good idea because with out the library we can't get books for school and to read for fun.

Anonymous said...

We as a community need to stop this! Libraries are places of knowldege that everyone needs!! Libraries need to stay open!

Anonymous said...

Don't close libraries. Why don't you close something that isn't important. Some people actually use libraries. Unlike other stuff that you pay billions for. Only like two percent of people use that stuff anyway.

dude i luv libraries without libraries i would probably die

Anonymous said...

why should people close libraries its the only place where we can get books without paying for them (unless they are overdue)

Anonymous said...

I think that cutting the library funding is a bad idea. People need libraries to read and find books. It is a passion to many people. I don't think that this is fair. Libraries are good for many people and I don't think that we should have to close libraries. I hope that they do not have to cut these libraries and have budget cuts because people really do need libraries!

I don't want the libraries to close at all. They have GOOD books and I have no where else to go!

Anonymous said...

i dont see why the governer would do something like this!i mean come on.i need books to read!

Anonymous said...

This is a big problem and if it is not all ready i hope it is resolved soon. Kids need libraries for when they need a book for school and they don't have it, the school cant provide it from the cuts that have all ready ben put into action by Governor Strickland, or they cant afford to buy the book them selfs. From the help all of us can give this can be prevented. Help save the library's!

Anonymous said...

That is the dumbest thing I ever heard! Cutting the library funds; the place where I find refuge?! That was a dumb move, all libraries shouldn't be attacked.

Anonymous said...

i dont whan't them to close down the library. im going to cry. what i think you should do is have a protest aginst the state because we dont need nothing elese closing down because its bad enough that we dont have in recreation centers in columbus anymore and the libraries are all we got know.

Anonymous said...

no lib. should be closed down at all. this is redicolus and we already dont have rec.

Anonymous said...

i wonder if my branch will close down? i sure hope not. i need books!

if we dont have librares then where r we supposed to get our books?id like ted strickland to answer that!

I LOVE IT

Anonymous said...

im homeschooled, and libraries help my grades and school. and when you think about it, how would cutting learning materials help budget cuts? and for some, libraries are most of thier schooling. keep the libraries open!!!

Anonymous said...

I know things have been hard lately and I've used the library a lot more to find books instead of buying them. Shutting down library's isn't a good idea. People would lose their jobs and it make reading a lot harder.

Jessica L. said...

I think that is ridiculous...
Aren't we all trying to boost the education of students? The library is a quiet place for students and people of all ages to better themselves.
Plus, I thought our libraries were supposed to be like one of the best in the nation. Life just isn't fair.

Anonymous said...

i hope that they dont close the librarys! that would be bad because you would have to buy all of your books. peole should fund librarys because it is a great resource for the public.

Rahwa said...

I sent an e-mail to my representatives and quickly recieved responses back. With all of the support shown around us, I doubt that this bill will pass and if it does, I'm sure that public support and funding will ultimately help our libraries to stay open and operate smoothly.

Anonymous said...

yeah we shouldnt let them close the libraries

Anonymous said...

yeah i get books for school there and i get books just to read there we cant let them close down the libraries

Anonymous said...

i would be really upset if i had to loose the libraries. i am really upset about that.

Anonymous said...

Libraries are a great part of our community. They give us freedom to check out and read the books that we want without buying them, and my experience with the Hilliard branch of the library has always been pleasant. The people who work there are very helpful and can always help you find what you are looking for. Also, the library is a great environment for reading, learning, and expressing. Our communities would surely be at a loss if any of the branches of the Columbus Metropolitain Library were closed down.

THERE IS NO WAY I COULD LIVE WITHOUT THE LIBRARY! i love to go there for my books and it is also a really great place to hang out. i don't know what i'd do without it.

Anonymous said...

How in the world could he do that? Library's are basically a need for a lot of people. If they cut hours and branches, the word won't get out, and there won't be time to do stuff that library useres normally like to do!

Anonymous said...

Help save the library's!!! Eliminating branches, and cutting back branches won't help anything! I think someone should start a petitition, so that the Senator can see how much we care about our library's!

Anonymous said...

Don't close the library!! Kids and teens need it for fun and to help us research for school projects!!

Tori Johnson said...

OMG, yeah like the library is something that needs to be around. If people think there going to shut down librays there nuts... NO NO!!

WITHOUT LIBRARYS U CAN NOT GAIN KNOWLEDGE!!!!!!!!!!! I love my library and i wish that we could keep it.I dont believe its fair to loose it.

i think that Ohio is in so much trouble that it is ok that he is cutting funds from libraries

the libraries is cool it has all the thing we want to know and if it closes the we will have to find thing on are own

Anonymous said...

hptwilightluver16 said...

they should not close the libraries cause with the way the economy is more ppl will b going to libraries

Libraries need to stay they help everyone expand their strengths this is an aweful idea. They cannot close libraries. I don't go there much but in the summer the library is what i rely on to keep reading!

I don't go to the library every day but when I do I love it because its just a nice little quiet place where you can go and just relax. I think kids and adults need libraries for many good reasons. The books are great to read and there are so many selections. The computers are also great for the learning games, information and resources. The libraries need to stay!!! It is a great place that I and many others enjoy going to!!!!!!

They shouldn't do this to our local libraries! What if we need some more information for reports than what is on the internet?

Anonymous said...

i seriously hope the library does not close. it is a perfect place for books, and studying and everything. closing libraries is the DUMBEST idea

Our branch is such a great branch!! I really hope it dosent close it would be a HUGE dissapointment!!:( PLEASE DONT CLOSE SWPL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

I'm just glad that they didn't close my library! I believe that closing on Sundays was a smart move that will help conserve money. Hopefully we will recover from this recession soon and then library funding will increase.

Anonymous said...

Why close libraries? It just makes people have to drive farther to a different one to do homework or to pick-up a book. We should keep the libraries open!

Anonymous said...

I think we all need a place to think and express your mind and emotions, and what better place to do it then at a library. If our branch closes there will be no place to do this and we wont have new and as many books to read.

we need libraries to live theres tons of books about anything in the world
